cat with rainbow pattern on its furThursday had quite a lot of waiting around for other people to do stuff. Also, while on the way home, I got a phone call from Zach saying that he was in town and wanted to get dinner. Then right after I said I’d show up there, I saw that I’d received a text half an hour before, requesting my presence elsewhere. So I had to cancel the dinner. Grrr. Well, it could’ve been a lot worse.

Been reading The Magic Furnace, a surprisingly accessible account of how scientists in the late 1800s to mid 1900s figured out how atoms were made up of protons, electrons, and neutrons, how radioactivity works, and also how atoms heavier than hydrogen were synthesized within stars. All those threads are much more intertwined than you’d think. I already know most of what the conclusions are, of course, but it’s interesting to read an account of how they figured it all out.
